Pani Zuzanna Marczyńska z Forum Żydów Polskich opisała dziś akcję medialną pana Betlejewskiego. http://the614thcs.com/38.1457.0.0.1.0.phtml Pani Marczyńska zrobiła to z interesującego punktu widzenia. Efektem jest opis zniecierpliwienia publiczności poirytowanej opóźnieniem spektaklu, wraz z opisem sposobu, jaki miejscowi znaleźli, aby problem rozwiązać.
W tym niezaplanowanym przez Betlejewskiego dynamicznym aneksie do artystycznej blagi, coś przykuło jej uwagę. Była świadkiem agresji nielicznych, biernego przyzwolenia wielu, bezkarności brutali, osamotnienia ofiar, jak i wyjęcia ich spod prawa. Do policyjnego radiowozu zaprowadzono pokojowo protestujących, a nie agresywnych, miejscowych osiłków.
Celne, bystre obserwacje. Równie celne wnioski z nich, wydawały się w zasięgu ręki, tak są oczywiste. A jednak nic z tego. Pani Marczyńskiej nie udało się trafić we wrota od stodoły i to z takiej odległości!
Pani Zuzanno, Żydów nie palono za " nie wpisanie się w 'kanon' miejscowej kultury", ani też za inność. Proszę pani, proszę mnie dobrze zrozumieć, nie mam Pani za złe tej bezradności w mierzeniu się z takim problemem. Ja Pani z całego serca życzę, żeby się Pani mogła obudzić rano i skonstatować szczęśliwie, że na świecie nie ma diabelskiego zła, że to był wszystko jakiś dziwny sen... Żeby się Pani nie musiała borykać z próbami zrozumienia, dlaczego ludzie popełniają takie potworne zbrodnie. To jednak dobrze, że Pani o nich wie i próbuje to zrozumieć i wyjaśnić. Nie mamy innego wyjścia. Bo ten świat to jednak nie jest sen.
Obawiam się jednak, że Pani wyjaśnienie i ogólniejsze refleksje, nie robią wiele ponad rozmydlaniem problemu. Zdaje się Pani wierzyć, że istnieje taka kategoria jak "tłum", któremu żadna etyka nie pomoże, kiedy wpadnie w zbiorowy amok, sprowadzony nań przez cynicznych manipulatorów. Proszę Pani, przecież tak rzetelnie opisała Pani, tę "miniaturę Jedwabnego", zaledwie kilka linijek wyżej. Żadnego amoku nie zauważyłem.
Nie wierzę w amok. Nie wierzę też, że społeczeństwo każdego narodu ma równe szanse na to, by stać się entuzjastycznym sprawcą zbrodni ludobójstwa, albo biernym, lub przychylnym obserwatorem wyczynów "miejscowych osiłków z marginesu". Nie można bez końca ignorować faktów. Te potworne zbrodnie zdarzają się pewnym narodom, a innym nie. Jest oczywiste, że istnieją narody daleko bardziej odporne na produkowanie "tłumów" mających tendencje popadania w "amok", niż inne. Co stanowi o tej różnicy? Przecież nie stały nadzór policyjny, czy brak okazji. Więc co? Geny? Przeznaczenie? Co o tym decyduje?
Moim zdaniem odpowiedź jest szokująco prosta. Decyduje, system wartości moralnych wedłóg których wychowujemy i uczymy nasze dzieci. Podręczniki, literatura, sztuka, gry, zabawy, postawa rodziców, przysłowia, anegdoty, wierzenia religijne, przesądy, bajki, legendy, dowcipy. Tę listę można ciągnąć długo. To jest nasze dziedzictwo kulturowe, to ono decyduje o duchowym klimacie naszej kultury, to jest właśnie to "mleko" wypijane od matki.
Jak nam może starczyć odwagi i sił, by rozpocząć dzieło "przebudowy" naszej kultury, byśmy do tych odpornych na zbrodnię, społeczeństw należeli, jeśli nam nie starcza odwagi nawet na otwartą, rzeczową dyskusję o tym czy istnieje problem z polską kulturą.
To małe Jedwabne, które Pani miała okazję zaobserwować, nie napawa mnie ani optymizmem, ani nadzieją. Czasami wydaje mi się, że społeczeństwa (narody) zdają podobne egzaminy tylko raz w swojej historii, a potem już tylko sąd. Nawet jak się odwlecze. Ponieważ jednak nie wiem czy tak jest, to póki żyję, chcę "sadzić jabłonie".
Zuzanna Marczyńska from Forum Żydów Polskich (Polish Jews Forum) wrote an interesting piece about media performance by mr Betlejemski on the anniversary of mass killing of Jews in Polish town of Jedwabne.
Being an unenthusiastic witness to this questionable event, she was able to catch an episode missed by most other media outlets.
Two young men determined to stop the burning of the barn, lodged themselves in the rafters, refusing to come down until mr Betlejemski abandons his plans to burn it.
This unexpected annex to his artistic humbug, exposed something mr Betlejemski didn’t plan on, and miz Zuzanna Marczyńska was there to witness it. She saw growing frustration with the peaceful protest, impatience, inability of Betlejemski to deal with the situation, and finally sharp, brutal reaction of few young local villagers, who to the loud applause of onlookers, dragged protesters out of the barn, and into a police car.
In an chilling remainder of a past, she saw brutal, aggressive few, with the approval of many, attacking passive, lonely and helpless victims. And then the victims were victimized ones more, when police took them into custody, instead of those young brutes, who forcefully, first dragged them down from the rafters, and then out of the barn, and into the police car. She witnessed the celebratory mood of the gathered crowd.
Disgusted, and shaken by it, she felt prompted to engage in some deep reflections on the subject of mass killings of Jews by their Polish neighbors, and killings of Polls by their Ukrainian neighbors during the WW2.
Demonstrating a noble desire to somehow process beastly behavior of some people, she jumped to the very wrong conclusions. I don’t blame her for that, though. It is very difficult subject, and I wish she didn’t have to busy herself with problems of this sort. I wish that she just would wake up in the morning, happy that it was all a bad dream, and that she would then also wake me up, so I wouldn’t have to think about it either. But it is not a dream, and we better understand why some of the nations seam to have some proclivity for mass killings, and the others seam to be more resistant to the idea.
I don’t buy the explanation offered by miz Zuzanna, that there is something like mindless crowd running amok, and that when it happens no ethics are able to hold it back. Or that we all are mere inches from being human beasts. While I don’t question the fact that we all have an ability for evil, I must insist that we stop ignoring the facts. It is obvious that this type of crime doesn’t happen on an equal scale everywhere in the world. So why is it? Is it genes? An inescapable fate? What is it?
The answer is deceptively simple. It is the culture, stupid. The value system we are choosing to raise our children in. The textbooks, literature, art, children's games, attitude of the parents, sayings, national myths, and legends, superstitions, and jokes... list can go on and on. Our cultural heritage, that is this mother’s milk, which either inculcate the children against certain type of behavior, or encourages it.
But how can we, here in Poland, tackle this problem when we even lack courage to engage in calm, honest discussion about the very fact of having a problem. Anybody trying it, is certain to be attacked as unpatriotic, or even as an enemy of Polish people. And often those accusers will, in a twisted way, prove the opponent’s point, by accusing him or her of being a Jew, usually, a “secret”, hidden Jew.
I’m not very optimistic, and sometimes when I feel particularly bad, i think that perhaps nations have but only one chance to pass an exam of this magnitude, and then the judgment. Maybe delayed, but inevitable. But I’m not depressed every day of the year, thank goodness, so I don’t really know how it is. And since I don’t know I prefer to struggle till my last day to make a contribution, no matter how small, to the healing of national psyche of my people.
